The Southern Rock Lobster is among the world’s most highly rated seafood delicacies, but that hasn’t stopped Kangaroo Island’s Ferguson family making this tasty crustacean even more tempting.

Through some clever lateral thinking, Ferguson Australia has developed a range of prestige gourmet rock lobster products, specialty simmer sauces and unique lobster flavoured oil. The products are being used by top chefs in some of the world’s finest restaurants, and visitors to the family’s processing plant at Kingscote have access to the full range – and more.

The Ferguson’s also fish for another of South Australia’s crustacean specialties – the amazing king crab – and purchase Spencer Gulf Western King Prawns from local fishers. Visitors are also given more than just an opportunity to buy the seafood. They can take part in an educational tour of the facility, view the live animals in holding and feeding tanks, and learn about their full life cycle and fishing techniques.

Due to the innovative nature of the Ferguson’s – who have been fishing for three generations – there is no limit on when you can purchase the product. While the normal fishing period for Southern Rock Lobster is just six months, a successful research and development program into holding tanks means they are now always in season.

Even purchasing the seafood has been made easy. People unable to take the seafood with them can organise delivery of the fresh product, as well as the processed range. This includes lobster medallions, cooked meat, raw tail (Japanese sashimi grade), liver, lobster spiders (without the tail) and oil.

From Emu Bay to American River can be found some of the Islands premier food producers. The sheep milk dairy at Island Pure offers visitors the opportunity to observe milking, cheese production, tastings and sales.

Ferguson Australia produces some of the world’s finest lobster and prawn products. At their holding shed in Kingscote you can view live king crabs, lobster and if your lucky some creatures just for the kids.

Kangaroo Island Ligurian Honey’s processing factory and Fryar’s Kangaroo Island Free Range Egg Farm, which produces 19,000 eggs per day are also located in this area.

The towns of Kingscote and American River offer many accommodation and dining options with picturesque locations on the waters edge. Don’t miss the wonderful views around Bay of Shoals winery, just behind Kingscote.
