The chickens at Fryar’s Kangaroo Island Free Range Eggs are living the good life.
Basically they do as they please. They reside on one of Australia’s great unspoilt islands in mobile sheds, they roam outside whenever they want and eat whatever they like.

It’s hen paradise – a stress-free lifestyle that benefits consumers as well as the chickens, with fresh eggs that are rich in flavour and protein. Fryar’s Kangaroo Island Free Range Eggs has been operating since 1992 when Tom and Fiona Fryar decided they wanted to establish the ultimate free range chicken environment.

They started with 400 hens and have been struggling to keep up with consumer demand since.
Today the farm covers more than 1200 hectares with 30,000 hens spread between 30 sheds. These are mobile so they can be easily moved to areas of fresh pasture, and the hens’ diet is supplemented by a mixture of grains that are grown, harvested and crushed on the farm. The hens even have their own “guardians” – Italian Maremma dogs that bond with their bird friends as pups and become fiercely protective. The island is free of foxes, and feral cats and eagles have learnt to keep away. It means the chickens are never locked in their sheds, which remain open at all times.

The farm is regularly audited by Animal Liberation SA, and the grading and packing areas are registered by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service.

About 14,000 eggs are gathered daily and stored in a cool-room to ensure a product of excellent freshness and quality. They are sold in shops on the island and at selected supermarkets across Australia. Look out for the Fryar name on the carton and the yellow Animal Liberation accredited sticker.

From Emu Bay to American River can be found some of the Islands premier food producers. The sheep milk dairy at Island Pure offers visitors the opportunity to observe milking, cheese production, tastings and sales.

Ferguson Australia produces some of the world’s finest lobster and prawn products. At their holding shed in Kingscote you can view live king crabs, lobster and if your lucky some creatures just for the kids.

Kangaroo Island Ligurian Honey’s processing factory and Fryar’s Kangaroo Island Free Range Egg Farm, which produces 19,000 eggs per day are also located in this area.

The towns of Kingscote and American River offer many accommodation and dining options with picturesque locations on the waters edge. Don’t miss the wonderful views around Bay of Shoals winery, just behind Kingscote.
