The recently established beverage firm Island Spirits
is playing its part in ensuring that Kangaroo Island offers visitors
a unique taste experience.
Island Spirits is South Australia’s first
boutique distillery and has plans to make a range of high quality
liqueurs and spirits, including some made from native ingredients.
Still in its start-up stage, partners Jon and Sarah Lark began
business in December 2006, making a popular lime liqueur.
Jon’s brother Bill, who started Australia’s
first boutique distillery, The Lark Distillery in Tasmania, is
helping establish this latest venture.
Products on the development list include high quality
gin, vodka, sambuca, schnapps, brandy and whisky. The Larks also
plan to offer spirits lovers something totally different, and
are currently experimenting with locally grown native plants and
fruits such as quandong. All the drinks will be handmade in small
batches using copper pot stills.
A cellar door at Cygnet River is scheduled to open
in mid to late 2007. Until then the products will be available
at local events and restaurants.
From Emu Bay to American River can be found
some of the Islands premier food producers. The sheep milk dairy
at Island Pure offers visitors
the opportunity to observe milking, cheese production, tastings
and sales. Ferguson
Australia produces some of the world’s finest lobster
and prawn products. At their holding shed in Kingscote you can
view live king crabs, lobster and if your lucky some creatures
just for the kids.
Kangaroo Island Ligurian
Honey’s processing factory and Fryar’s
Kangaroo Island Free Range Egg Farm, which produces 19,000
eggs per day are also located in this area.
The towns of Kingscote and American River offer
many accommodation and dining options with picturesque locations
on the waters edge. Don’t miss the wonderful views around
Bay of Shoals winery, just
behind Kingscote.
