Kangaroo Island’s ‘clean green’
environment has provided the impetus for a number of alternative
and value-added products. Significant developments have included
agricultural diversification and aquaculture. Noteworthy products
include sheep and cow milk cheeses, free-range eggs, honey, corn-fed
chicken, lamb and seafood - particularly abalone, lobster and marron
(freshwater crayfish) A further area of growth is in viticulture
with a number of vineyards and cellar doors being established on
the Island. Local food producers have gained an enviable reputation
for gourmet products. Specialty cheeses, jams and preserves, native
food or ‘bush tucker’, corn-fed and free-range poultry
are now successfully marketed locally and interstate. Products now
successfully exported include marron, lobster, Ligurian honey, abalone
and wine.
Good Food Kangaroo Island is an
industry group formed to encourage and support value adding producers
and protect the integrity of the Island’s produce. Regional
food groups have been established throughout South Australia and
are actively working with producers to establish regional branding
and long term relationships with major retailers seeking access
to high quality, branded products.
