Kangaroo Island Farmhouse Cheese

Email: brie01@dodo.com.au

Farmhouse Cheeses of Kangaroo Island produce quality, award winning handcrafted white mould cheeses. Milk is produced on farm giving a true “farmhouse” cheese.

Each morning and afternoon Mos Howard will be in the milking shed at the family property tending to a combined herd of Fresian and Aussie Reds. From here the milk is off to the nearby cheese factory for the next day's shift. From here it's pasteurised and taken to the cheesery and placed in stainless steel vats.

Rennet has been added to the milk to make it set. Cheese cultures and mould spores also go in. If you remember your nursery rhymes you'll remember this little mixture, it's whey, and here they tip the curds into containers. Now time and gravity do their bit. At Farmhouse Cheeses they make Brie, Borda white and Camembert, soft, moist cheeses. After they've been drained and turned they're then placed in a saline solution.

The cheese is then placed in a “mould room” where temperature and humidity are controlled.
The mould creates a chemical reaction with the cheese curd, ripening each from the outside. That's why a young Camembert or Brie is runny at the edge but very firm in the middle.

Kangaroo Island Farmhouse Cheese has won the champion Fancy Cheese at the Sydney Royal Show and the inaugural Australian Grand Dairy Award for his White Mould cheese. The Farmhouse range is available throughout Australia at major supermarkets, gourmet retail outlets and the Central Market in Adelaide.

The area from Island Beach to Antechamber Bay provides far more than just the gateway to the Island. Clean sand, safe swimming, secluded accommodation and spectacular views are a few of the highlights of this area. The Chapman River has beautiful camping and picnic areas to enjoy the local food and wine.

Sunset Winery features a wine and food tasting experience as well as regional platters with spectacular views of Eastern Cove from the pristine Island Beach to Kingscote. The clean pastures of the peninsula are home to Farmhouse Cheeses of Kangaroo Island, a “true” farmhouse cheese with milking to packaging occurring on the one farm. Kangaroo Island Trout use the old Penneshaw reservoir to grow out their trout.

Penneshaw is becoming a foodies destination with numerous cafes and restaurants offering local produce in season. Gourmet catering for the whole Island is available from Fish / 2 Birds and a Squid.
