It all began as an experiment.
Farmers Rob and Linda Howard had some spare land
next to the old town reservoir at Penneshaw. The environment was
pristine and the water was fresh – conditions ideal for
growing trout.
It turned out to be an inspired move. Demand for their fresh trout
grew quickly and they soon branched into smoking the fish.
Today Kangaroo Island Trout is a thriving business
supplying supermarket and restaurant outlets across the island
with premium fish.
The venture has now gone well beyond the original
plans for a small trout hobby farm.
From just one floating cage used for feeding and fattening, they
now have four cages plus a processing and smoking room built to
international food standards.
A focus on quality has resulted in a product of
the highest standard, and they have continued expanding their
range to include fresh or smoked whole fish, portions, boneless
and vacuum packed. They are currently refining plans for a trout
pâté.
The fish can be purchased retail, or in cafés
and restaurants across the island.
The area from Island Beach to Antechamber
Bay provides far more than just the gateway to the Island.
Clean sand, safe swimming, secluded accommodation and spectacular
views are a few of the highlights of this area. The Chapman
River has beautiful camping and picnic areas to enjoy the
local food and wine.
Sunset Winery
features a wine and food tasting experience as well as regional
platters with spectacular views of Eastern Cove from the pristine
Island Beach to Kingscote. Kangaroo
Island Trout use the old Penneshaw reservoir to grow out their
trout.
Penneshaw is becoming a foodies destination with
numerous cafes and restaurants
offering local produce in season. Gourmet catering for the whole
Island is available from Fish / 2
Birds and a Squid.
